Gemini Hits 750 Million Users — Google's AI App Is Now a Platform

Share

Google’s Gemini app has crossed 750 million monthly active users, the company revealed in its Q4 2025 earnings call. This puts Gemini within striking distance of ChatGPT, which reported around 800 million MAU in late 2025. Combined with the landmark Apple deal to power next-generation Siri, Google is positioning Gemini as the default AI layer for billions of devices.

The numbers mark a remarkable turnaround. Just two years ago, ChatGPT’s launch caught Google flat-footed, prompting a “code red” and hasty Bard launch. Now Gemini is a legitimate competitor with platform-scale distribution.

Gemini Growth Google Gemini has grown from embarrassing launch to 750M users in under two years

The Growth Trajectory

MilestoneDateMAU
Bard launchFeb 2023~10M
Gemini rebrandFeb 2024~150M
Gemini 2.0 launchDec 2024~400M
Apple deal announcedJan 2026~600M

The growth accelerated dramatically after Gemini 2.0 and the Apple announcement. The prospect of Gemini powering Siri drove massive interest in trying the standalone app.

How Gemini Caught Up

Google’s comeback required several strategic shifts:

1. Model Quality Improvements

Gemini 3 now outperforms competing models on most benchmark tests:

BenchmarkGemini 3GPT-5.2Claude Opus 4.5
MMLU92.1%90.1%89.4%
HumanEval88.4%87.2%80.9%
GSM8K97.2%96.4%94.8%
MATH84.1%81.2%78.6%

The benchmark lead gives Google a credible claim to having the most capable AI model — a narrative shift from 2024 when GPT-4 dominated.

2. Distribution Advantages

Google has distribution channels that OpenAI cannot match:

Gemini Distribution
├── Standalone App
│ ├── Android (pre-installed on new devices)
│ ├── iOS (App Store)
│ └── Web (gemini.google.com)

├── Embedded in Google Products
│ ├── Google Search (AI Overviews)
│ ├── Gmail (Smart Compose, Summarize)
│ ├── Google Docs (writing assistance)
│ ├── Google Sheets (analysis, formulas)
│ └── Google Meet (transcription, summaries)

├── Android Integration
│ ├── Default assistant (replacing Google Assistant)
│ ├── System-level AI features
│ └── Third-party app integration

└── Apple Partnership
    ├── Powers Siri (iOS 26.4+)
    ├── 1.5B active Apple devices
└── Default AI for Apple ecosystem

OpenAI has ChatGPT and API customers. Google has Gemini embedded in products used by billions.

3. Apple Partnership

The Siri deal is transformative. Apple has 1.5 billion active devices. When Gemini-powered Siri launches in iOS 26.4, every iPhone, iPad, and Mac user will interact with Gemini — whether they know it or not.

This is the largest AI distribution deal in history. It guarantees Gemini billions of daily interactions and positions Google’s AI at the center of Apple’s ecosystem.

The Platform Play

Google is not just building an AI chatbot — it is building an AI platform:

Developer Access

Gemini API access is expanding:

TierRate LimitPrice
Free60 RPM$0
Standard1,000 RPM$0.50/1M tokens
EnterpriseUnlimitedCustom

Developers can build applications on Gemini, creating an ecosystem of Gemini-powered products.

Enterprise Integration

Google Workspace customers get Gemini integrated into their productivity suite:

  • Docs: Writing assistance, summarization, translation
  • Sheets: Data analysis, formula generation, insights
  • Slides: Presentation generation, image creation
  • Gmail: Email drafting, summarization, smart replies
  • Meet: Real-time transcription, meeting summaries

Enterprise adoption creates sticky revenue and valuable training data.

Consumer Features

The standalone Gemini app has expanded beyond chat:

  • Gemini Live: Real-time voice conversation
  • Image generation: Create images from descriptions
  • Code execution: Run Python code in the app
  • Extensions: Connect to Google services and third-party apps
  • Memory: Persistent context across conversations

ChatGPT vs Gemini: The State of Play

The AI assistant market is now a two-horse race:

DimensionChatGPTGemini
MAU~800M750M
Revenue modelSubscription + APIFreemium + API + Ads
DistributionStandalone app, APIGoogle ecosystem + Apple
Model qualityGPT-5.2Gemini 3 (slight edge)
EnterpriseChatGPT EnterpriseGoogle Workspace AI
Monetization$20/mo subscriptionAds, Workspace premium, API

ChatGPT has the brand recognition and first-mover advantage. Gemini has the distribution and ecosystem integration. The next 12 months will determine whether distribution or brand wins.

The Advertising Question

Google’s core business is advertising. Gemini creates both opportunity and risk:

Opportunity: AI-powered search could show more relevant ads. Gemini interactions provide rich signals about user intent.

Risk: If users get answers directly from Gemini, they may not click through to websites (and ads). This is the “zero-click” problem that has worried publishers for years, now amplified by AI.

Google has not fully revealed how it will monetize Gemini at scale. Subscription revenue ($20/mo for Gemini Advanced) is meaningful but modest compared to Google’s $300B+ annual advertising revenue.

The bull case: Gemini makes Google services stickier, increasing overall engagement and ad inventory.

The bear case: Gemini cannibalizes Search advertising without adequate replacement revenue.

What 750M Users Means

At 750 million MAU, Gemini is now:

  • Larger than Twitter/X (~400M MAU)
  • Approaching Instagram (~1.4B MAU)
  • A platform that cannot be ignored

This scale creates network effects:

1. Data flywheel. More users generate more interaction data, improving the model.

2. Developer attention. Platform scale attracts developers building on Gemini APIs.

3. Enterprise credibility. User scale proves the technology works, reducing enterprise adoption risk.

4. Negotiating leverage. Scale gives Google leverage in partnerships (like Apple) and regulatory discussions.

For Developers

If you are building AI-powered applications:

1. Gemini API is now a serious option. With scale comes stability and investment. Google will not abandon a 750M user platform.

2. Expect tighter Google integration. Building on Gemini gives you access to Google’s ecosystem (Search, Workspace, Android).

3. Watch the Apple integration. When Gemini powers Siri, iOS developers will have new AI capabilities to build on.

4. Consider multi-model strategies. With Gemini and ChatGPT both at scale, building for both hedges platform risk.

Google’s AI comeback is complete. Gemini is no longer the also-ran chasing ChatGPT — it is a platform with 750 million users and distribution to billions more. The AI assistant wars are just getting started.

Enjoyed it? Pass it on.
